BICUTAN, TAGUIG CITY – The National Academy of Science and Technology, Philippines (NAST PHL), in partnership with the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Regional Office II, will conduct the ScienTeach: Symposium for the Youth and Dialogue with NAST PHL Scientists in Batanes on February 18 and 19, 2025.
The primary objective of these programs is to promote science and technology (S&T) through episodes highlighting varying topics featuring National Scientists, NAST PHL Members, and NAST PHL awardees who are accomplished in their respective fields.
The ScienTeach: Symposium for the Youth will be held on February 18, 2025, at Boulder-Bay Residences, Basco, Batanes. This activity aims to bring our scientists closer to the youth and inspire and encourage students to pursue a career in S&T. It is open to all junior and senior high school students. Six (6) distinguished scientists are invited to share their knowledge and experiences in their respective fields of expertise. These are: National Scientist Lourdes J. Cruz, a leading scientist in the field of biochemistry of toxic peptides from the venom of fish-hunting Conus marine snails; Academician Jose Maria P. Balmaceda, an expert in the field of Mathematics focusing on the field of representation and structure theory of finite groups and related structures; Academician Eufemio T. Rasco, Jr., recognized for his pioneering works in the field of plant breeding, specifically in tropical vegetables and tropical white potato breeding; Academician Aura C. Matias, an expert in industrial engineering research, sustainable development, and environmental management; Academician Camilo C. Roa, Jr., an internationally recognized clinician-scientist in the field of respiratory medicine; and Academician Roel R. Suralta, a scientist known for his significant contributions in the field of root science, specifically in crop root plasticity.
The Dialogue with NAST PHL Scientists will take place in Sabtang, Batanes, on February 19, 2025. This activity aims to encourage professionals and researchers to conduct more research and adapt S&T for development. The resource speakers for this event also include National Scientist Cruz, Academician Balmaceda, Academician Rasco, Academician Matias, and Academician Suralta.
These activities will also be participated by Academician Jaime C. Montoya, President of NAST PHL, Dr. Virginia G. Bilgera, Regional Director of DOST Regional Office II, Ms. Nora T. Garcia, Director of the Provincial S&T Office in Batanes, Dr. Benjamin D. Paragas, Regional Director of DepEd Regional Office II, and Ms. Luningning E. Samarita-Domingo, Director of NAST PHL.
