NAST PHL to Conduct Scienteach: Symposium for the youth and Dialogue with NAST PHL Scientists in the Lost Horizon of the South– Camotes Islands, Cebu

BICUTAN, TAGUIG CITY – The National Academy of Science and Technology, Philippines (NAST PHL), in collaboration with the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Regional Office VII, will conduct the ScienTeach: Symposium for the Youth and Dialogue with NAST PHL Scientists in Camotes Islands, Cebu, on March 11-12, 2025.

These programs aim to promote science and technology (S&T) through episodes highlighting varying topics featuring National Scientists, NAST PHL Members, and NAST PHL awardees who are accomplished in their respective fields.

The ScienTeach: Symposium for the Youth will be held on March 11, 2025 in Camotes Islands, Cebu. This activity aims to bring our scientists closer to the youth and inspire and encourage students to pursue a career in science, technology, and innovation. It is open to all junior and senior high school students.

Moreover, the Dialogue with NAST PHL Scientists will also take place at the same venue on March 12, 2025, to encourage professionals and researchers to conduct more research and adapt science and technology for development.

Five (5) distinguished scientists are invited as resource speakers to share their knowledge and experiences in their respective fields of expertise. They are:

  • National Scientist Lourdes J. Cruz, a renowned scientist in the field of biochemistry of toxic peptides from the venom of fish-hunting Conus marine snails; Balmaceda, an acclaimed expert in the field of Mathematics focusing on the field of representation and structure theory of finite groups and related structures;

  • Academician Marco Nemesio E. Montaño, a leading scientist recognized for his outstanding scientific achievements in the field of biological chemistry, specifically in the structural, chemical, and physical studies of carrageenan, agar, and other polysaccharides from Philippine seaweeds;

  • Academician Camilo C. Roa, Jr., an internationally recognized clinician-scientist in the field of respiratory medicine; and

  • Academician Roel R. Suralta, an esteemed scientist known for his significant contributions in the field of root science, specifically in crop root plasticity.

These activities will also be participated in by Academician Jaime C. Montoya, President of NAST PHL, Engr. Adrian D. Cruz, Officer-in-Charge of the DOST Provincial S&T Office in Cebu, Dr. Salustiano T. Jimenez, Regional Director of DepEd Regional Office VII, Ms. Luningning E. Samarita-Domingo, Director of NAST PHL, Engr. Roland M. Padayhag, Supervising Science Research Specialist, and Ms. Elvirg F. Solana, Science Research Specialist II at the DOST Provincial S&T Office in Cebu.
