BICUTAN, TAGUIG CITY –The National Academy of Science and Technology, Philippines (NAST PHL), in partnership with the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Regional Offices will conduct two (2) ScienTeach: A Symposium for the Youth for April.

The ScienTeach: Symposium for the Youth started in 2016 as part of the 40th Anniversary of NAST PHL. The ScienTeach was adopted as a virtual Symposium for the Youth in the year 2020 to continue its service during the pandemic. It is a collection of episodes that highlights varying topics featuring National Scientists, NAST Members, and its awardees who are accomplished in their respective fields. Its objectives are to promote science and technology, bring our scientists closer to the youth, and inspire and encourage students to pursue a career in science and technology. This event is open to all junior and senior high school students.

The first activity will be held in partnership with DOST-Region XI on April 11, 2023, from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM at the Mapúa Malayan Colleges-Mindanao, Davao City. Six (6) distinguished scientists are invited to the event as resource speakers to share their knowledge and experiences in their respective fields of expertise.

  • National Scientist Lourdes J. Cruz – biochemistry of toxic peptides from the venom of fish-hunting Conus marine snail

  • Academician Maribel G. Nonato – Pandanus alkaloids

  • Academician Benito M. Pacheco – engineering sciences and technology and disaster risk management

  • Academician Arnel A. Salvador - experimental condensed matter and applied solid state physics

  • Academician Fernando P. Siringan – environmental changes and processes from geological to historical time scales

  • Academician Guillermo Q. Tabios III – hydrology, hydraulics, and water resources systems engineering

The program will be participated by Academician Jaime C. Montoya, President of NAST PHL, Academician Alvin B. Culaba, Vice President of NAST PHL, Dr. Anthony C. Sales, Regional Director of DOST Regional Office XI, Dr. Allan G. Farnazo, Regional Director of DepEd Regional Office XI, and Engr. Alejandro H. Ballado Jr., Vice President for Academic Affairs of Mapúa Malayan Colleges-Mindanao.

The second activity will be held in partnership with DOST-Region VIII on April 25, 2023, from 8:00 AM to 12:00 NN via Zoom. Four (4) distinguished scientists will share their knowledge, experiences, and expertise in their respective fields as resource speakers.

  • Academician Rex Victor O. Cruz – watershed management

  • Academician Virginia C. Cuevas – mycology and environmental biology

  • Academician Arvin C. Diesmos – systematic biology, ecology, and conservation of Philippine biodiversity

  • Academician Mudjekeewis D. Santos – fisheries science and governance in the Philippines

This will be participated by Academician Eufemio T. Rasco Jr, Chair of the Agricultural Sciences Division of NAST PHL, Dr. Evelyn R. Fetalvero, Regional Director of DepEd Regional Office VIII, Engr. Ernesto M. Granada, Regional Director of DOST Regional Office VIII, and Academician Windell L. Rivera, Chair of the Biological Sciences Division of NAST PHL. The program moderator is Dr. Pia Marie S. Albano, 2022 NSTW Outstanding Research and Development Awardee.
