The Philippine Science Heritage Center (PSHC), under the management of the National Academy of Science and Technology (NAST), recently participated at the National Science and Technology Week 2018 held last July 17 – 21, 2018 at The World Trade Center, Pasay City. It exhibits the mobile learning app games developed by the top three winners of the Salinlahi Evolution 2017: An App Development Competition.
Outstanding Scientists and Scientific Outputs Recognized during the NAST 40th Annual Scientific Meeting

Five new NAST members and one Corresponding Member were elected and formally included in the elite roster of Academicians during the awarding ceremony on July 12, 2018 by the National Academy of Science and Technology Philippines (NAST PHL). The investiture was led by Science Secretary Fortunato T. De La Peña and Acd. Rhodora V. Azanza, NAST President. GLENN B. GREGORIO, Ph.D. (Genetics), MUDJEKEEWIS D. SANTOS, Ph.D. (Applied Marine Biosciences), VICTOR B. AMOROSO, Ph.D. (Botany), ARNEL A. SALVADOR, Ph.D. (Physics) and MAHAR K. MANGAHAS, Ph.D. (Economics) were elected as Academicians while RIGOBERTO C. ADVINCULA, Ph.D. (Chemistry) was admitted as Corresponding Member.
NAST PHL also presented the following awards: Outstanding Young Scientists (OYS), NAST Environmental Science Award, NAST Talent Search for Young Scientists, Outstanding Books, Outstanding Scientific Papers, and Best Scientific Posters.
The recipients of Outstanding Young Scientists this year were: ANGEL B. ENCARNACION, Ph.D. (Marine Science) of Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Region II; DIXON T. GEVAÑA, Ph.D. (Forest Environmental Science) of University of the Philippines (UP) Los Baños; NONILLON M. ASPE, Ph.D. (Natural History Sciences) of Western Philippines University- Puerto Princesa Campus; RINLEE BUTCH M. CERVERA, Ph.D. (Mechanical Electrical and Materials Engineering) of UP Diliman; JEY-R S. VENTURA, Ph.D. (Environmental Engineering and Biotechnology) of UP Los Baños; and MARIO A. TAN, Ph.D. (Pharmaceutical Sciences) of University of Sto. Tomas.
NAST Promotes Industrialization at Luzon Regional Scientific Meeting

The National Academy of Science and Technology, Philippines (NAST, PHL) in partnership with the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Regional Offices I, II, III, IV-A, IV-B, V, NCR and CAR hosted the Luzon Regional Scientific (RSM) Meeting, with the theme, Science and Technology-Enhanced Transformation for Sustainability and Industrialization (2018-2030) on May 9-10, 2018 at the Royce Hotel, Clark Freeport Zone, Mabalacat, Pampanga.
The last in the series of regional scientific meetings for 2018, this RSM brought together the country’s experts, academics, and private and public stakeholders to discuss issues concerning the attainment of the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
The conference topics included sustainability and resiliency, affordable and clean energy, smart electricity grid, sustainable water resources, quality of water and waste water, sustainable cities and communities, ICT ecosystem, smart city program, and railway development.
Dr. Reynato C. Arimbuyutan, co-chairperson of the Regional Development Council III welcomed the participants to this two-day event. He pointed out that Central Luzon is the fastest growing region in the Philippines today. This economic growth will further accelerate as Central Luzon will be the primary gateway of the Philippines through the expansion of Clark International Airport, establishment of Bulacan Aero Police, development of Subic ports, construction of Manila-Clark and Clark-Subic railway systems, expansion of North Luzon expressway and Subic-Tarlac expressway, among others. He expressed the need to collaborate with the experts to fulfill these endeavors and to bring about inclusive growth to Filipino people and sustainable development for our country.
