PSHC held its Annual Open House on September 10-14, 2018

TAGUIG CITY – The Philippine Science Heritage Center (PSHC), under the management of the National Academy of Science and Technology, Philippines (NAST PHL) held its Annual Open House on September 10-14, 2018. During the long-week celebration, a total of almost 800 students and teachers from different schools in Taguig City, Makati City, Las Piñas City, Pateros, Manila, and Pasay City. Aside from the free tour, PSHC also organized a 3-day Meet Your Scientist program, film viewing, games, and Disaster Risk Reduction Management Seminar.
For the 3-day Meet Your Scientist Program, two (2) National Scientists (NS Ernesto Domingo and NS Raul Fabella), one (1) Academician (Acd. Jose Maria Balmaceda), and three (3) Outstanding Young Scientists (Dr. Gabriel Romero, OYS 2002, Dr. Arvin Diesmos, OYS 2008, and Dr. Mario Antonio Jiz II, OYS 2017) were invited to give their lectures and share their experiences.
In partnership with DOST – Science Education Institute, films from the 2nd Indie-Siyensya Film Contest were played during the film viewing activity of the Annual Open House. The visitors also had fun at the games prepared by the PSHC. Games included are Pick-Up Sticks XL, Dragon’s Tail, House of Cards, and Tumbang Preso.
A Disaster Risk Reduction Management Seminar was also organized to increase awareness on the said topic. Invited speakers include Mr. Jeffrey Perez, OYS 2017 of DOST – Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology, Ms. Sharon Juliet Arruejo of DOST – Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration, and Mr. Ben Brillo, EMT of Taguig City Rescue Team.
The Philippine Science Heritage Center is a science center mandated by the Republic Act of 9107 to be the repository of the achievements and outstanding accomplishments and contributions of the Filipino scientific community. It is located at the Science Heritage Building, DOST Complex, General Santos Ave. Bicutan Taguig City.

Salinlahi Symposium Series in Tagbilaran, Bohol September 20, 2018

Bringing science closer to the public especially to far flung areas not usually reached by the scientific conferences and seminars, the National Academy of Science and Technology (NAST PHL), together with the Philippine Science Heritage Center (PSHC), in cooperation with the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Provincial Science and Technology Center in Tagbilaran, Bohol held its Salinlahi Symposium Series in The Metro Centre and Conevention Center on September 20, 2018.
National Scientist, Angel C. Alcala, Academician Jurgenne H. Primavera, Dr. Edsel Maurice Salvaña, Mr. Jeffrey S. Perez, and Engr. Albert G. Mariño made the seminar workshop meaningful because of their discussion about, Philippine Land and Marine Biodiversity, Geological Stability, HIV Global Implications of the Philippine Epidemic and different scholarship offered by DOST-SEI.

PSHC is being managed and maintained by the National Academy of Science and Technology Philippines (NAST PHL) as mandated by Republic Act 9107. NAST PHL is the country’s recognition and advisory body on matters related to science and technology.
2nd Philippine Sarcoma Consortium Meeting

PASIG CITY – The Sarcoma Study Group of the Philippine General Hospital (PGH), in cooperation with the National Academy of Science and Technology, Philippines (NAST PHL) and The Medical City, successfully organized the 2nd Philippine Sarcoma Consortium Meeting last September 29, 2018 at the Medical City, Ortigas Avenue, Pasig City.
The meeting was attended by almost a hundred doctors from various hospitals, institutions, and medical organizations across the Philippines. Some of the organizations and institutions involved include the Philippine Musculoskeletal Tumor Society, the Philippine Society of Pediatric Oncology, the Philippine Society of Medical Oncology, the Philippine Society of Oncology, and the Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (PhilHealth).
The meeting aims to spread awareness and educate both the medical community and the lay people regarding bone sarcoma and soft tissue sarcoma. It also wants to improve existing specialty centers and develop and implement standardized treatment protocols. The discussions centered on the consensus treatment pathway of both bone and soft tissue sarcoma and the diagnosis and management of soft tissue sarcoma, with emphasis on synovial sarcoma. Overall, its long-term goal was to enhance collaboration in order to better manage and understand these difficult diseases.
