NAST PHL Speakers Bureau Conducted In Region II

GONZAGA, CAGAYAN - In celebration of the Regional Science and Technology Week (RSTW), the National Academy of Science and Technology, Philippines (NAST PHL), in partnership with the Department of Science and Technology Regional Office II successfully organized the Speakers Bureau on August 15, 2018 at the Riverview Hotel and Resort, Gonzaga, Cagayan.
This activity is a program under the Advisory Function of NAST PHL which aims to bring experts in various fields to the regions to lend their expertise to academic institutions or any interested organizations who are in need of speakers and resource persons on any science-related issues. This project was conceived primarily to serve provincial centers, which have less access to S&T information, through scientific and technological lectures as requested by different regions.
The activity was attended by over eighty (80) researchers and development practitioners, representatives from state universities and colleges, and government offices from all over Cagayan. Experts invited were: Dr. Alonzo A. Gabriel, OYS 2013, professor from UP Diliman, Dr. Angel B. Encarnacion, OYS 2018, officer-in-charge of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources, Dr. Rico C. Ancog, assistant professor V and scientist III from UP Los Baños, and Dr. Laura T. David, OYS 2007, professor VII from UP Diliman.
Salinlahi Symposium Series in Gonzaga, Cagayan

Four (4) renowned scientists gave their lecture and shared their experiences on their science careers. The lecturers include Dr. Raphael Guerrero, Professor of Ateneo de Manila University (Laser, Holography and a Career in Physics), Dr. Angel Encarnacion, Senior Fishing Regulations Officer of Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Region II (The Wonders of Seaweed and More), Dr. Dixon Gevaña, Assistant Professor of the University of the Philippines Los Baños (Conserving Mangroves for their Blue Carbon), and Dr. Mudjekeewis D. Santos, Scientist II of the National Fisheries Research and Development Institute (#Sayangtist?). The undergraduate and graduate scholarships offered by DOST were also discussed by Mr. Peter Gerry Gavina, Senior Science Research Specialist of DOST – Science Education Institute.
The Philippine Science Heritage Center (PSHC), under the management of the National Academy of Science and Technology, Philippines (NAST PHL), held its Salinlahi Symposium Series in Gonzaga, Cagayan, last August 16, 2018, as part of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Region II’s 2018 Regional Science and Technology Week (RSTW). The symposium aims to promote and bring science to the public and to encourage youth to pursue career in science and technology.
Attended by almost one hundred fifty (150) students and teachers, Regional Director Engr. Sancho Mabborang gave his welcome remarks and presented the innovations of the DOST Region II on this year’s RSTW. After the welcome remarks, Ms. Reihvelle Perez, Planning Officer III of NAST PHL, gave a brief background about the Academy and the PSHC.
The undergraduate and graduate scholarships offered by DOST were also discussed by Mr. Peter Gerry Gavina, Senior Science Research Specialist of DOST – Science Education Institute.The participants gave a positive response to all the speakers. A comment from a students stated that the symposium is “natatangi at napapahon” and requested to hold Salinlahi Symposium Series in Gonzaga, Cagayan again in the future.
The Salinlahi Symposium Series was moderated by Ms. Victoria Mabborang of DOST Region II.The Philippine Science Heritage Center is a science center mandated by the Republic Act of 9107 to be the repository of the achievements and outstanding accomplishments and contributions of the Filipino scientific community. It is located at the Science Heritage Building, DOST Complex, General Santos Ave. Bicutan Taguig City.

NAST 40th Annual Scientific Meeting Resolutions Presented TO DOST, DILG AND DENR

Resolutions summarizing the recommendations of the National Academy of Science and Technology, Philippines (NAST PHL) were presented by National Scientist Edgardo D. Gomez, chair of the Resolutions Committee during the second day of the NAST 40th Annual Scientific Meeting on July 12, 2018.
The Department of Science and Technology Secretary Fortunato De la Peña expressed his appreciation to the Academy for the presented the Resolutions. He responded warmly by assuring that all recommendations on infrastructure will be considered in the research and development, technology transfer, and human resource development initiatives of DOST. On the recommendations on environment, he assured that DOST will pay special attention to the reel-time monitoring of the quantity and quality of groundwater, being an emerging problem facing by the country. In a more specific move, Sec. De la Peña had already instructed Philippine Science High School (PSHS) campuses to install rainwater collection for their use. On the recommendations on fisheries and oceans, he is requesting the Academy a good proposal for a long-term research and development programs on the oceans.
