BICUTAN, TAGUIG – Her outstanding and significant contributions and research projects in environmental conservation and protection led to Dr. Emilyn Q. Espiritu of Ateneo De Manila University (ADMU) winning this year’s NAST Environmental Science Award (NESA) given by the National Academy of Science and Technology, Philippines (NAST PHL), in partnership with the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) and Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR).
Among a number of other outstanding finalists, Dr. Espiritu was chosen with her winning entry entitled “Assessment of quantity and quality of microplastics in the sediments, waters, oysters, and selected fish species in key site along the Bombong Estuary and coastal waters of Ticalan in San Juan, Batangas”.
Dr. Espiritu, a pioneer in the field of Ecotoxicology in the country, is a known expert in water quality and water pollution, and for her studies on different environment pollutants, particularly microplastics. Her works have raise awareness and insights on environment pollutants and its effect to the environment.

NAST Environmental Science Award (NESA) is one of the awards given by the National Academy of Science and Technology, Philippines (NAST PHL). This is in partnership with the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), which aims to recognize outstanding scientific and technological research works that have significant contributions to environmental protection and conservation in the country.
For 20 years, NESA has been the Academy’s contribution to the celebration of the World Earth Day and its response to counter the rapid pace of environmental degradation and the possible eventual depletion of natural resources.

NAST PHL ANNOUNCES EXTENSION OF SUBMISSION OF NOMINATIONS FOR 2020 DOST AWARDS

BICUTAN, TAGUIG CITY- The National Academy of Science and Technology, Philippines (NAST PHL), the highest recognition body in the Philippines that recognizes and provides incentives to Filipino scientists for outstanding achievements in scientific research and development, has extended the submission of nominations for 2020 National Science and Technology Week (NSTW) Awards and 2020 DOST Intellectual Property Awards (IPA) to May 21 due to the on-going imposition of the Enhanced Community Quarantine (ECQ).
The NSTW Awards are intended to recognize deserving individual or group who had exemplified outstanding qualities in science and technology and who have earned themselves worthy of their achievements and accomplishments. It is divided into three (3) categories, namely: (1) Outstanding Science Administrator Award or the Dioscoro L. Umali Medal, (2) Outstanding Technology Commercialization Award or the Gregorio Y. Zara Medal, and (3) Outstanding Research and Development Award, which is further subdivided into two (2) sub-categories: (a)Basic Research or the Eduardo A. Qusimbing Medal, and (b) Applied Research or the Julian A. Banzon Medal.
