Dr. Dranreb Earl O. Juanico, PhD (Physics) of the Technological Institute of the Philippines was adjudged the winner of the 2023 NAST Environmental Science Award. He presented his winning research entitled “Does mangrove restoration imply coastal protection? A prospective study?” He discussed the coastal protection potential of mangroves by examining the “bio-shielding” effect against storm surges driven by category-5 winds in two coastal sites—Tacloban, Leyte, and Pan de Azucar, Iloilo. The study may help settle policy-oriented debates on whether governments, especially in the Philippines and Southeast Asia, must invest massively in coastal mangrove restoration for long-term community benefits.

The NESA is intended to recognize outstanding scientific and technological research works that have significant contributions to environmental protection and conservation in the country. Spearheaded by the efforts of the late NAST PHL President and National Scientist Perla D. Santos Ocampo, this award was established through the help of Dr. Hugh Greenwood, a philanthropist, and founder of the Children’s Research Fund in the United States. This award was formerly called NAST-Hugh Greenwood Environmental Science Award.
