NAST PHL holds forum on Marine Spatial Planning and Coastal Reclamation: A Focus on Manila Bay Area

The National Academy of Science and Technology, Philippines (NAST PHL), in collaboration with OCEANA, conducted a Science Policy and Information Forum (SPIF) on “Marine Spatial Planning and Coastal Reclamation: A Focus on Manila Bay Area” on 7 October 2020 via Zoom webinar.
NAST PHL Academician (Acd.) and President Rhodora V. Azanza officially opened the forum by highlighting the need for archipelagic countries such as the Philippines to devote on studies and make development plans based not only on land spatial planning but also on marine spatial planning. She expressed hope that the webinar would provide scientific information and guidance on matters concerning the country’s coastal and marine areas relevant to the sustainable management of these ecosystems which provide valuable goods and services. Acd. Mudjekeewis D. Santos, member of the Agricultural Sciences Division of NAST PHL, moderated the forum.
NAST PHL Launches First Virtual Symposium for the Youth with DOST Caraga

BUTUAN CITY, PHILIPPINES – The National Academy of Science and Technology, Philippines (NAST PHL), in partnership with Department of Science and Technology Region XIII (DOST-CARAGA), will conduct the first episode of ScienTeach: A Virtual Symposium for the Youth on October 02, 2020 at 9:00 AM with a live broadcast on the NAST PHL and DOST-CARAGA social media accounts. The virtual symposium is open for all junior and senior high school students from the region.
The resource speakers for the first episode of the virtual symposium are National Scientist Lourdes J. Cruz, Academician Christopher C. Bernido, and Academician Maribel G. Nonato with 2020 Outstanding Young Scientist, Dr. Francis Norman C. Paraan as Master of Ceremonies and Moderator.
In the past years, the Symposium for the Youth with NAST Scientists was held in various provinces of the country in partnership with the DOST Regional Offices. Due to the pandemic, the symposium will go virtual this year with a new concept. ScienTeach is an adaptive effort of NAST PHL to continue serving its stakeholders. It is a collection of episodes that will highlight varying topics and feature NAST Members and awardees who are accomplished in their respective fields. It will utilize online platforms while obtaining the objectives of the traditional lecture series, which are to: 1) promote science and technology, 2) bring our scientists closer to the youth, and 3) inspire and encourage the students to pursue a career in science.
The event will also be participated by NAST PHL President, Academician Rhodora V. Azanza, NAST PHL Vice President, Academician Fabian M. Dayrit, and DOST Caraga Regional Director, Dir. Dominga D. Mallonga.
