NAST PHL launches three books which popularize science to the public

The National Academy of Science and Technology, Philippines (NAST PHL) proudly launched three new book publications during the 39th Annual Scientific Meeting at the Manila Hotel last July 12, 2017.
Launched were two books written by National Scientist Ricardo M. Lantican, entitled: “Science Nuggets 1 From Aristotle to Stem Cells” and “Science Nuggets 2 From the Universe to Energy, Food, and Agriculture”, and one book by Academician Evelyn Mae Tecson-Mendoza entitled: “Biosketches: Filipino Trailblazers in Science and Technology, Defining the Contribution of NAST Academicians to S&T and Its Development in the Philippines”.
The book launch was hosted by Academician Asuncion K. Raymundo. As described by Academician Fabian M. Dayrit, Science Nuggets Volume 1 treats the readers to numerous stories about famous scientists, not to tell us how great they are, but how human they are. It takes the readers on a journey through the history of science, from Aristotle’s theory that Earth is the center of the universe to the advances in stem cell research.
NAST 39th Annual Scientific Meeting Resolutions presented to DOST and DA

The National Academy of Science and Technology, Philippines (NAST PHL) presented the Resolutions which were the result of three regional scientific meetings and the 39th Annual Scientific Meeting to Sec. Fortunato de la Peña of the Department of Science and Technology and USec. Eduardo Gongona of the Department of Agriculture.
In his response, Sec. de la Peña committed the DOST towards the attainment of the Blue Economy, including its related resolutions. He also invited the other Departments of the government to do the same. Sec. De la Peña also noted the importance of partnering with LGUs in implementing research and development as also mentioned by several speakers of the ASM. Sec. De la Peña also highlighted the importance of the maritime and shipbuilding industry, and encouraged continuous discussion and research towards the Blue Economy.
Responding on behalf of the Department of Agriculture, USec. Gongona expressed support for the creation of a new agency on Fisheries and Ocean Resources, but advised that the timing of its establishment is very important. He noted that billions are lost due to foreign poaching, dynamite fishing, and other malpractices and threats. USec. Gongona encouraged better marketing and commercialization of the numerous researches which have already been done by our scientists.
Outstanding Scientists and Publications Lauded during the NAST 39th Annual Scientific Meeting

The National Academy of Science and Technology Philippines (NAST PHL) admitted two Academicians and one Corresponding Member during the its 39th Annual Scientific Meeting which was held at the Manila Hotel on 13 July 2017.
Cesar L. Villanoy, Ph.D. (Physical Oceanography) and Raymond Girard R. Tan, Ph.D. (Mechanical Engineering) were admitted as Academicians while Carlito B. Lebrilla, Ph.D. (Chemistry) was admitted as Corresponding Member.
NAST also presented the following awards: Outstanding Young Scientists (OYS), NAST Talent Search for Young Scientists, Outstanding Books, Outstanding Scientific Papers, and Best Scientific Posters.
The Outstanding Young Scientists award was given to: PHILLIP A. ALVIOLA, M.S. (Wildlife Studies), ALETTA CONCEPCION T. YÑIGUEZ, Ph.D. (Marine Biology and Fisheries), LANNDON A. OCAMPO, Ph.D. (Industrial Engineering), MARIO ANTONIO L. JIZ II, Ph.D.(Medical Science), NATHANIEL P. HERMOSA II, Ph.D. (Physics), JEFFREY S. PEREZ, M. Engineering (Civil and Environmental Engineering), JAYEEL S. CORNELIO, Ph.D. (Sociology), and KRISTA DANIELLE S. YU, Ph.D. (Economics).
The NAST Talent Search for Young Scientists awardee was JONATHAN CARLO A. BRIONES, Ph.D. (Biological Sciences). Also awarded were RAFAEL A. ESPIRITU, Ph.D. (Chemistry) and ARGEL A. BANDALA, Ph.D. (Electronics and Communications Engineering). Special citations were given to RAMON CHRISTIAN P. EUSEBIO, Ph.D. (Environmental Engineering) and JERROLD M. TUBAY, D.Sc. (Mathematical and System Engineer).
The NAST Outstanding Book Award for 2017 was given to the Encyclopedia of Common Medicinal Plants of the Philippines, Volume 1, with the following co-authors: Domingo A. Madulid, Esperanza Maribel A. Agoo, Isidro C. Sia, Myrna L. Abello, Rita Grace Y. Alvero, Maria Minerva P. Callimag, Anne Josephine C. Quitain, Irene M. Villaseñor, Maribel G. Nonato, Rene Angelo S. Macahig and Fabian M. Dayrit. The Encyclopedia was published by the Philippine Institute of Traditional and Alternative Health Care in 2014.
