NAST PHL CONDUCTS VIRTUAL PAPER PRESENTATION FOR 2020 NSTW OUTSTANDING RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT AWARD

BICUTAN, TAGUIG CITY – The National Academy of Science and Technology, Philippines (NAST PHL) will hold the Virtual Paper Presentation of the 2020 National Science and Technology Week (NSTW) Outstanding Research and Development Award (ORDA) on September 14, 2020, Monday, at 9:00 AM with a live broadcast on the NAST PHL social media accounts. This year, six (6) selected entry papers from different institutions will vie for the highly coveted awards for Basic Research and Applied Research.
Feeding Metro Manila in 2050’ Vision Bags ‘Special Mention’ in The Food System Vision Prize

The use of hexagon itself is symbolic because it is a shape commonly seen in nature. It is the ultimate in efficiency as mathematicians discovered. The circularity of the system, the use of Fourth Industrial Revolution tech, as well its overwhelming impact outside of the system is shown by the radiating waves. |
BICUTAN, TAGUIG ─ The Vision “Feeding Metro Manila in 2050” ranked one of the top 14 out of 1,300 submitted entries and was conferred a “Special Mention” in the Food System Vision Prize, launched by The Rockefeller Foundation, in partnership with SecondMuse and OpenIDEO. This was formally announced on August 6, 2020. The Manila team, led by Academician Eufemio T. Rasco, Jr. from National Academy of Science and Technology, Philippines (NAST PHL), will receive $25,000.
Feeding Metro Manila in 2050 was showcased as a system that nurtures the health of the people and the planet, adapts to changing climate, and is sensitive to the diversity of food culture. It was envisioned as the typical 2050 dinner plate as diverse, mostly plant based with less rice and highly processed grains, and assembled by a robust app that considers an individual’s nutritional and health needs and capabilities, impact of the meal composition on the environment, local food culture, and farmers’ welfare.

BICUTAN, TAGUIG CITY – The National Academy of Science and Technology, Philippines (NAST PHL) held its first ever virtual Awarding Ceremony last July 10, 2020 as the culminating activity of the 42nd NAST Annual Scientific Meeting.
The Awarding Ceremony introduced the new members of the Academy, the Outstanding Young Scientists, and the researchers who won this year’s set of awards. The full list of 2020 NAST Awardees is as follows:
INVESTITURE OF NEW ACADEMICIANS AND CORRESPONDING MEMBERS
Five new Academicians were conferred during the virtual awarding ceremony: ARNEL N. DEL BARRIO, Ph.D. (Ruminant Nutrition), WINDELL L. RIVERA, Ph.D. (Medical Sciences), CHARLOTTE M. CHIONG, Ph.D. (Medical Sciences), MARIBEL G. NONATO, Ph.D. (Chemistry), and CHRISTOPHER P. MONTEROLA, Ph.D. (Physics/Data Science). The membership to the Academy is given to resident Filipino scientists who have made exemplary contributions to science and technology in the Philippines.
In addition, four new Corresponding Members were also conferred: FRANCIS L. DE LOS REYES III, Ph.D. (Environmental Bioengineering); GONZALO C. SERAFICA, Ph.D. (Chemical Engineering); RAMON B. GUSTILO, M.D. (Orthopedics); and ANNABELLE P. VILLALOBOS, Ph.D. (Chemistry). The Corresponding Member award is conferred on non-resident Filipino scientists who have made exemplary contributions to the advancement of science and technology and must have continuing connections and contributions to Philippine science.
