CAMARINES NORTE –The National Academy of Science and Technology, Philippines (NAST PHL), in partnership with the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Regional Office V and PSTC Camarines Norte, will conduct the first episode for this year’s ScienTeach: A Virtual Symposium for the Youth in Camarines Norte on March 28, 2022, at 9:00 AM via Zoom with a live broadcast on the social media accounts of NAST PHL, DOST RO5, and PSTC Camarines Norte.

The event will be moderated by Dr. Victor Marco Emmanuel N. Ferriols, an alumna of 2021 Future Science Leader Forum. Three (3) notable scientists are invited to the symposium as resource speakers to share their knowledge and experiences in their respective fields of expertise, they are Academician Windell R. Rivera, an expert in molecular diagnostics and epidemiology, molecular protozoology, and medical biotechnology; Dr. Arnold R. Salvacion, an environmental scientist and 2021 Outstanding Young Scientist awardee; and Dr. Marvin A. Villanueva, a veterinary science researcher and also a 2021 Outstanding Young Scientist.

The ScienTeach or virtual Symposium for the Youth started in the year 2020 in partnership with the DOST Regional Offices as a coping mechanism of NAST when the pandemic strikes. ScienTeach is a collection of episodes that highlights varying topics featuring National Scientists, NAST Members, and its awardees. Its objectives are to promote science and technology, bring our scientists closer to the youth, and inspire and encourage the students to pursue a career in science.

BICUTAN, TAGUIG CITY - As part of the 2021 National Science and Technology Week (NSTW), the National Academy of Science and Technology, Philippines (NAST PHL) presented Pagtanaw 2050, the country’s first 30-year foresight on science, technology, and innovation (STI), to the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) and the National Economic Development Authority (NEDA) in a virtual turnover ceremony on 22 November 2021.

The ceremony was attended by DOST Secretary Fortunato T. De La Peña and other key officials and representatives from public and private institutions, SUCs and HEIs, and other partners in development.

The opening remarks was given by NAST PHL President Academician Rhodora V. Azanza referred to the Pagtanaw 2050 as the “S&T sector’s cornerstone and contribution towards the attainment of the aspirations and goals embodied in the Constitution, and those provided by global and national frameworks such as the UN Sustainable Development Goals and AmBisyon Natin 2040.” She also introduced the vision of the Philippines as a “Prosperous, Archipelagic, Maritime Nation” by 2050, which acknowledges the country’s maritime base in building a competitive, inclusive, and sustainable society through science-based utilization of natural endowments and diplomatic assertion of our rights.

The National Academy of Science and Technology, Philippines (NAST PHL), will hold virtually the awarding ceremony of the 2021 DOST Intellectual Property Awards on December 06, 2021, Monday.

A total of 107 scientific publications will be awarded with the International Publication Award (IPA), which came from 10 DOST agencies, namely: DOST Regional Office No. 2, Advanced Science and Technology Institute (ASTI), Forest Products Research and Development Institute (FPRDI), Industrial Technology Development Institute (ITDI), Philippine Nuclear Research Institute (PNRI), Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS), Philippine Textile Research Institute (PTRI), Food and Nutrition Research Institute (FNRI), Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), and Science Education Institute (SEI).

A total of 45 utility models will be awarded the Utility Model Registration Award, which came from the FNRI, FPRDI, ITDI, PTRI, and Metals Industry Research and Development Council (MIRDC).

The IPA awardees increased by 8%, while UM has reached 144% increase in awardees this year. These numbers manifest the success of the program in encouraging the DOST research institutes and other DOST agencies to publish in refereed journals and in registering their developed technologies.

Awardees of the IPA will receive a certificate of recognition and cash incentive to each publication published in Clarivate Analytics or Scopus listed journals while Php 15,000.00 will be given to registered utility models. The DOST institutions with the highest number of publications and utility model registration will receive a cash incentive of Php 50,000.00.
